Day 7: Boise: shopping paradise of the American northwest

Neither Emma nor I slept well. Around 2am we gave up trying and read for a while.

While she was reading Grimm's Fairy Tales, and wondering how Mark backed the trailer at ninety degrees to the rest of the driveway, I turned to her and said "nie mówie popolsku".

She looked at me, and gave me an odd look. "You -- don't speak Polish?"

To which I replied "zawolam policje".

"You'll call the police?" Pause. "Why are you speaking Polish?"

"I have an international phrasebook on my Kindle, and I thought it would be funny."

The world is a very strange place at 2am.

...

Later Robin and Mark drove us into downtown Boise. Breakfast was at Goldy's which was written up as one of the top 10 breakfast places in America in Bon Appetite Magazine. Justly earned.

Having eaten my bodyweight the previous few days I simply had a walnut-cinnamon French toast and coffee.

Our waiter was a Guatemalan named Esau, who had moved to Boise six years ago with his American (now ex-) wife. Were stunned to learn he'd only been learning English six years, as his English was flawless. The secret was simple: study and practice.

He had taught Spanish back in Guatemala so he understood the principles of grammar, and after moving to Boise spent 6-8 hours a day in the library. He also recommended working in a restaurant for practice, and watching cartoons (simple words, easy to follow the story).

After we went and did our best to rejuvenate the local economy. As expected we spent big on Levi's and bed linen, which only cost about 1/3rd what we have to pay back home.

What we didn't expect was finding d'Affinois, Emma's favourite brie and cheesy-goodness incarnate, at the local co-op for about half of what we pay back home. The a'Affinois went very well with the bottle of Mondave Cab Sav (also probably half what we'd pay in Sydney).

I also lashed out and bought a new thermal, hat and vest, which went very nicely with the d'Affinois and Mondave.
Dinner was at Judi's, where we ate steak and d'Affinois with the Moldave, and played with Judi's dogs. Brodie is the lab, and Mischa the German Shepherd/Husky/Chou/wolf (1/4 wolf; how cool is that?), although my brother once convinced a couple that it was a long-haired Nicaraguan Chihauhau.

And we watched San Francisco smash Texas in the second game of the world series.

You did well with Mizcah's name though which by the way means little mouse in Czech. got another camera as the one I had when you here just didn't work so now can take lots more pics and post them on FB for you to see in the future.
